Abstract: This course explores the relationship between political systems and the societies that are governed by them. We will take a broadly historical look at variation in power arrangements and bases of legitimate authority by studying topics such as the organization of coercion, the development of law, and other facets of governance, as well as developments in religion, the economy, and other related social spheres.
